The Phonebooths of the London Olympics

The Artbox Project in action near the Tower of London.

The classic red British phone booth( oops I mean phone box) of Dr. Who and James Bond fame, was originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee.  Though the cell phone took the iconic phone boxes out of  service and off the streets some time ago, they live on in the imagination of Anglophiles everywhere.

Maybe that is  why earlier this year,  British Telecom decided to give some of Britain's most creative artists replicas to make art out of. just in time for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics. The BT Artbox Project  is the result.  Check out the photos below for an idea of what is scattered about the streets of London these days.

At the end of the summer, the Artboxes will be collected and auctioned off for charity. In the meantime Londoners and visitors can enjoy them as they walk around.  How cool is that?  A complete gallery of the Artboxes and an interactive map to help you find them can be found on the BTArtboxes website

A big tip of my pink feathered vintage hat to Kuriositos.com ,where I found many of the pictures used here and where you can find even more pix and info about the BT Artbox project.

Aren't these fun? I love the idea and some rather well known artists joined in. I like that they will be auctioned off for charity after the Olympics too.

I love the wind-up box but none of these will ever replace Tardis.

Those booths are awesome! It would be hard to miss the pink ones at the very top.

Such a lovely post. The post office boxes - iconic symbols of communication - are a thing of my childhood. wx
